Infrastructure and transport
For a sector that handles more than 20 million tonnes of raw materials and finished products in Italy alone, logistics and transport are key competitive factors. This is particularly important considering that both raw materials and finished products are transported to and from very distant locations. For example, many raw materials are shipped from the Ukraine, Turkey, Germany and France, while finished products are exported to more than 180 countries worldwide.
Added to this is the fact that 80% of production is concentrated in the Sassuolo/Scandiano cluster, an area of just a few square kilometres where intercompany transport, the prevalent use of road haulage, the policy of multiple pick-ups adopted by road hauliers and the presence of more than 22,000 employees all contribute to severe traffic congestion.
The single most important cause of the problem is the lack of adequate road and rail infrastructures for the requirements of freight and human transport in the area. Assopiastrelle has played a leading role in negotiations with local and national public administrations and has sat on various joint committees, although these have not yet yielded concrete results and frequently involve lengthy implementation times at odds with the need for rapid action that characterises the business world.
