"The Manifesto of the Mediterranean House"

La Federazione Ceramica e Laterizi ha presentato il proprio "Manifesto"

The Mediterranean House represents a culture and a philosophy, an approach to construction, a form of expertise and a way of belonging typical of a specific geographical region and climatic context. Heavy clay and ceramic materials have long served as a model for high-profile construction and today continue to play a key role in major contemporary architecture projects. This important role is firmly rooted in science and ranges from bioclimatic and seismic aspects through to acoustics and aesthetics. To explore this potential, enshrined in the ‘Manifesto of the Mediterranean House’, Federazione Ceramica e Laterizi organised a conference on Thursday 19 May in the splendid setting of Villa Guastavillani in Bologna.

The Mediterranean house is built using local products and raw materials supplied by well-established companies. It is the exact opposite of northern European models typical of cold climates, which have been imported without taking account of the specific needs of regions with warm, mild climates. The elements that contribute to construction of the Mediterranean house are chosen based on two main factors: the energy efficiency of the building in a climate where summer cooling has a bigger impact than winter heating due to steadily rising temperatures; and indoor comfort, which is directly related to air quality and interior aesthetics. Ceramic and heavy clay products help to achieve these goals while at the same time guaranteeing sustainability (in terms of life cycle analysis and durability), fire resistance and seismic safety of buildings.

The event was introduced by Francesco Ubertini, Chancellor of the University of Bologna, and saw the participation of Franco Manfredini, Chairman of Federazione Ceramica e Laterizi, Francesco Paolo Ausiello from ASTER, Maria Chiara Bignozzi, Director of Centro Ceramico and a Professor at the University of Bologna, Francesco Dal Co, Professor of History of Architecture at the University of Venice, Giovanni Fraziano, Professor of architectural composition at the University of Trieste, Marco Corradi, Chairman of ACER Azienda Case Emilia-Romagna and Emilio Mussini, Chairman of the Promotional Activities and Trade Fairs Commission of Confindustria Ceramica. The event was moderated by Achille Perego from QN – Quotidiano Nazionale.
