Confindustria Ceramica’s recommendations for the ‘made in’ label

“Made in Italy, a guarantee of excellence”

With the new Ceramics of Italy mark identifying ceramic tiles, sanitaryware and tableware produced in Italian factories, Confindustria Ceramica aims to offer a response to the current difficulties by exploiting a characteristic appreciated by consumers the world over.

The new Ceramics of Italy mark follows in the footsteps of the previous Ceramic Tiles of Italy mark used solely for ceramic tiles and features the same graphic design. First created in the early 1970s by Assopiastrelle for promotional initiatives carried out by the association and its member companies, the original mark was subsequently restyled by the Armando Testa agency. The new mark differs in that it applies to the entire ceramic sector and will serve as a point of reference at a time when international product sales and declaration of origin are becoming crucial factors.

Like its predecessor, the Ceramics of Italy mark is based on the resolution passed by the Confindustria Ceramica Executive Board on 29 January 2008 approving the “Recommendation on the origin of ceramic products”, a voluntary undertaking on the part of companies to clearly indicate the origin of goods placed on the market in order to promote transparency of sales activities and informed consumer choices.

“This is a historic step for Italian ceramic companies,” declared Chairman Franco Manfredini. “It represents a clear strategy on the part of our association with the aim of protecting genuine Italian products manufactured in Italian factories, an important success factor given the popularity of our products amongst consumers all over the world."

Along with the manufacturing quality, technical and aesthetic research and outstanding design of Italian products, the “Made in Italy” mark first and foremost represents a set of values, including workplace health and safety, elimination of toxic materials and a constant commitment to sustainable development in terms of products and the manufacturing process.

This initiative on the part of Confindustria Ceramica voluntarily makes up for a shortcoming on the part of the European Union, which unlike many other areas of the world has not yet succeeded in introducing obligatory indication of origin marking for goods placed on the market, in spite of the efforts made in particular by the leading Italian business associations and Confindustria. The mark is reserved for member companies and complements the many other actions that the association has been pursuing to address these themes.

In one such initiative pursued via the specific ISO and CEN technical committees, the new versions of the European and international technical standards for ceramic tiles have introduced the requirement of an indication of origin on ceramic tiles and their packaging.
